Photography has changed tremendously since its invention in the early 1800s. Advances in photographic equipment has long allowed pictures to be taken at almost any location, and yet most portrait photography remains tied to the idea of a studio. This made sense when portraits required huge lights and bulky equipment, but is hopelessly out-dated in the era of high resolution digital 35mm cameras.
The fact is photography studios exist for the convenience of the photographer, not the subject, and while wonderful pictures can be taken in a studio, it can create only a subset of the incredible possibilities available with location shooting in natural light. This is most obvious when photographing children, who’s true nature is more apparent on a playground or playing in a meadow than in a dark studio, but is also apparent with adults as well.
